The EastEnder Story -
Your Owners and Host, David and Frances Page

David and Frances Page have had the opportunity to travel the world while being part of the hospitality business but have now found themselves here in beautifull Woodstock, Vermont.

David’s background in the hospitality and service field goes back to the famous Savoy Hotel in London, England where he got his start and motivation to serve others!

After a formal training in Switzerland in Hotel and Tourism Management he went on to embark upon a management training with Hilton International Hotels, initially in Food and Beverage which led him and his wife to London, Germany, The Sudan Africa, and Venezuela for 9 years and then after one year in Milwaukee a further 9 years with Wyndham Hotels and Resorts mainly in the Caribbean, more specifically in the Bahamas, Houston Texas, Jamaica and finally in Barbados. At that point they moved in 1991 to Aruba where David opened and managed for 10 years the 800 room independent La Cabana All Suite Beach Resort and Royal Cabana Casino (www.lacabana.com) at that time the largest resort of its kind in the Caribbean.

He then went on to manage the locally owned De Palm Group of companies (www.depalm.com) offering a wide variety of tours and activities on the island of Aruba.

During their 13 years in Aruba, David, Frances and their two daughters enjoyed taking short breaks from their homes in the Islands and established a second home in the Quechee Lakes Development. Having found a place where they realized they would like to spend more time in the future, they then found land in Hartland and eventually moved there and started to build on it.

In 2004 after a few months off to reassess the next phase of their lives they left their life in Aruba and the Caribbean behind for Vermont! As David says on being asked the obvious question….exchanging one paradise for another!

David then took on the task as CEO of La Tourelle Resort and Spa, a beautifull boutique resort in Ithaca, NY (www.latourelle.com) to oversee a multi million dollar addition and construction of a world class spa.

After a year, the opportunity came up to purchase the EastEnder Restaurant in Woodstock and in June 2006 David and Frances took on a new challenge and moved permanently here.

David is generally at the restaurant to welcome you and be your host for the evening.

His wife Frances will often be in attendance with the locals and joining in the local conversation!

David is a believer in the concept of Servant Leadership (http://www.greenleaf.org/) and has put this leadership philosophy into practice in his business career.

His approach to his work puts into practice the thoughts of Robert Greenleaf….

Robert Greenleaf, the man who coined the phrase, described servant-leadership in this way.

“The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first.  Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.  He or she is sharply different from the person who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions.  For such it will be a later choice to serve – after leadership is established.  The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types.  Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature.

The difference manifest itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being served.  The best test, and difficult to administer, is: do those served grow as persons; do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society; will they benefit, or, at least, will they not be further deprived?”

Taken from the Servant As Leader published by Robert Greenleaf in 1970.

The EastEnder Restaurant and its team aspires to create an environment in which people come and enjoy each others company while being served by those who enjoy and derive fulfillment from serving others.

We all look forward to serving you!
